I like to have at least one fresh language activity on Caspar's shelves. As a rule I'm not a fan of workbooks or worksheets but agree if carefully selected and used appropriately they can be effective.
.
Caspar likes to play 'office' and do pretend work. Well, it's not really pretend because he actually does work he just doesn't realise it. He has taken to these initial sound cards as his office work as he can use his pencil to circle or fill in the answer. It's why I've chosen to store these in a plastic pouch, so they look a little 'office' like. With language activities we usually do them together or when I'm nearby, he definitely lacks confidence in this area.
.
Caspar only does these activities by choice. Sometimes I will encourage him but he always has the option of saying no. Some of the other language activities we use have been given to him by his speech pathologist, so even though he really needs to do them there is no force or pressure, it needs to be enjoyable. I have put four sheets in the pouch. I want to keep the activity short so he can enjoy it and get though it. These initial sound cards are perfect for him right now. He can do them with about 70% accuracy.
.
Here Caspar is using the Initial Sound Choice Cards - Step 1 and Initial Sound Cards - Step 1 from Montessori Print Shop.

As Caspar is spending more time at school I feel like doing activities together helps me to stay in touch. Usually while he is working I am just observing. While observing I am able to pick up on the letters that he has difficulty forming. It's good to know these things.

As you know we don't homeschool but I think it's important to show an interest in your child's development. Every parent I speak to does some activity at home (beyond reading) to help with their child's language, for some it's LeapPad for us it's Montessori.
