When I was looking for first walkers for Otis I wrote this post with a few ideas Montessori Shoes and First Walkers. One thing I noticed about all of these first walkers is that they seems to have flexible soles, which is great, but I was worried about outside, protecting the child's feet on stones and uneven paths. It was the number one feature that surprised me about the Soft Star Shoes.
Soft Star Shoes have provided us with a pair of their shoes for the purpose of review. We chose the Child Sandal with Velcro - Ocean/Ultra Blue because it's now summer and I wanted shoes that would be comfortable in our heat and still look great. If you are interested Soft Star Shoes also have the option of designing your own child sandal with velcro. If you are in a colder climate they have lots of warm shoe options.
So how did they fare? These pictures were taken after Otis had been wearing them almost exclusively for two weeks. No scuffs or marks. No threads coming undone. Still in perfect condition. Although Otis does not do them up really tight they stay on firmly though all of his play (including running and jumping) and there have been no rubbing or red marks on his skin.
As I mentioned above the sole is flexible but thick enough that the feet are protected from uneven surfaces. Otis gets a bit of sand in through the open toe however it is to be expected with any sandal. The uppers of the shoe are super soft and look and feel comfortable. The fact that Otis wears them is testament that they are comfortable and meet his approval. As you can see in this post they are also super simple for him to get on and take off - a must for any of his shoes.
Comfortable - yes. Safe - yes. Easy to independently get on/take off - yes. Ethical company - yes.
We are pretty happy with these shoes!
My pick for colder months is the Child Classic with Velcro. I also love these (gorgeous!) Child Mary Janes in Red. I have been told that Soft Star Shoes ship daily to Australia (they are based in Oregon) and their prices compare well with high quality shoes and sandals sold here. If you are unsure about their commitment to their customers check out the Soft Star Shoe Instagram account where there are lots of glimpses into their workshop. I loved to read how their shoes are made here.
Thank you to Soft Star Shoes for our lovely sandals. I highly recommend them. For more Soft Star shoes you can see their range of shoes for children 0-12 months, children and their Waldorf and Montessori Classroom shoe selection.
