Early Sensorial - The Mystery Bag
The Mystery Bag is an activity usually associated with older children (3-5 years). An adult would put a few small items in the bag (it's important that the child is already familiar with all of the items). The child (sometimes blindfolded) would put their hand in the bag and using touch name the items and then pull them out one by one. This is an excellent activity to do with the Geometric Solids. Caspar tells me at school he also uses the mystery bag to match items.

For a toddler the activity needs to be adapted slightly. To start Otis will not wear a blindfold. There are only a few items that Otis knows well enough to say. So we start with four items; brush, wooden egg, keys and a spoon. Otis was quite good at feeling without looking but he would not say the name of the item. So I adapted the activity. I would ask him for the item and he would find it using touch only.

"Otis can you find me the keys?"
Worried, searching look...
"Ahh, Keys!"

A lot of fun. Otis loved it. It's an activity that might only last five minutes but it's a really good sensorial activity and it gives the toddler an opportunity to sit down and concentrate.
