May Peace Prevail on Earth - Montessori

Paper Cranes at How we Motessori Peace on Earth August 31 2015

Maria Montessori was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in three consecutive years. She spoke passionately about the importance of education in promoting peace and argued that education was a means of eliminating war. As a parent I wonder how can I teach my children peace. Perhaps to be peaceful themselves (tolerant, respectful, capable of independent and critical thinking, moral, intelligent, of strong character) and to be a global citizen - this needs to be modelled and taught. Also that peace starts with each of us, our relationships with each other, our neighbours, our schools and our communities. To commemorate Maria Montessori's birthday today I am sharing some of her most profound quotes from Education and Peace

Averting war is the work of politicians; establishing peace is the work of education.

Peace is a goal that can only be attained through common accord, and the means to achieve this unity for peace are twofold:  first, an immediate effort to resolve conflicts without recourse to violence—in other words, to prevent war—and second, a long-term effort to establish a lasting peace among men.

An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.

The child is capable of developing and giving us tangible proof of the possibility of a better humanity. He has shown us the true process of construction of the human being. We have seen children totally change as they acquire a love for things and as their sense of order, discipline, and self-control develops within them.... The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.

I believe that laws and treaties are not enough: what we need is a world full of miracles, as it seemed miraculous to see the young child seeking work and independence, and manifesting a wealth of enthusiasm and love. A new world for a new man: that is what we sorely need today.

May peace prevail on Earth. I hope you have a wonderful day wherever on Earth you may be!
