It's been quite a tough week so I wanted to end the week with a light hearted post. I love the book Animalium and I really wanted to share with you another two books in the Welcome to the Museum series. 

I honestly love Animalium so much, it is oversized, it is stunning and while I adore the concept and design it was the illustrations which spoke to me the most. So I sought out the illustrator and found Story of Life: Evolution. And while I was looking I found Historium which is also in the same series. What a delight to have all three of these books. 

Animalium is still the stand out as animals are universally loved. The other two books are better suited to a slightly older audience and one who is specifically interested in or researching archaeology or evolution. However the three complement each other and are perfectly placed in the home or school library. 

If you are not familiar with the concept the Welcome to the Museum is a series of books based on a virtual museum, rather than walk through the museum you look through the pages of the book. Each title in the series is organised into galleries that display full colour specimens with informative text. 

Animalium (which I've written about previously here) presents the animal kingdom in six galleries including; Invertebrates, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. Historium has the galleries based on geographical location of the archaeological finds including; Africa, America, Asia, Europe, The Middle East and Oceania. Animalium and Historium are both oversized and stunning books (at 15 x 11 inches). 

Story of Life Evolution isn't in a book format. It is a fold out guide to evolution, it is so beautiful I'm considering removing it from it's cover and putting it on the wall. The guide starts with single cell organisms and passes through each period to end with modern life forms. One side of the fold out is illustrated (with labels of each period and organism) while the reverse side is full of information relevant to each period. It is a wonderful guide for the visual learner. 

All three books in the series are seriously beautiful and are so well designed. They are attractive to children but have an aesthetic that appeals to the adult also. I feel these would especially appeal to the Montessori child for who history and evolution has such a research focus.
