Flockmen - Open Ended, Natural Play

Flockmen at How we Montessori

Flockmen are a timeless wooden stacking toy. They are really easy going, you can use them as you like. I have shown Otis how they can be stacked and suggested some ways in which they can be used. But like most children he plays with them just as he likes! We received a set of Flockmen for review and honestly, it's a pleasure to have them in our home.

This is the set of 32 and they come in a drawstring bag for storage. The Flockmen are nice and smooth and have a natural wooden feel. They are a wonderful open ended toy.

We have used them so much because they can be stacked in a traditional way as above. In that respect, they are like a wooden block. However as they have these heads, arms, and legs and kind of slot together, they can be stacked and balanced in irregular ways, in which Otis likes to experiment. This is fantastic to watch... will it balance or won't it?

I can only imagine how good this is for his creativity. He loves this. It falls frequently, and he is trying to stack them so he uses all of the pieces. It's a little frustrating, it's really satisfying. It takes time, patience, self-control, a steady hand and calm!

So many smiles. You can see all the ways Flockmen can be used here. They would be fabulous as counters and there are so many possibilities to use them for developing numeracy skills and role play. However for now, Otis' developmental need is to play with them just like this...

For a wooden, open-ended toy that can be used for many years and for many age groups, Flockmen are really affordable. They are suitable from 2 years and would be great in the home, playgroups and school settings. They feel great, look great and are super durable. It's a 10 out of 10 from us!

Otis uses so much concentration and really has to think about how is structure is formed. Playing with Flockmen really makes the child slow down. It's also satisfying when his pieces balance and when he finishes his building.
