Superfoods for Kids

Mavella Fruit Kids Smoothie Bowl at How we Montessori

Today I'm sharing some ways I get a little bit of extra nutrition into my children's diet. Both boys eat a wide variety of foods however as Otis eats very little I want to make sure what he does eat really counts, especially for breakfast and snack. This post features Mavella Superfoods which are all c/o Mavella (I have a discount code for you at the end of the post).

My children do not eat breakfast cereal, I've tried so many different types, but they just don't want it! It's the same with toast. Both love a cooked breakfast (Caspar loves eggs and Otis pancakes), but I also prefer they have some easier options. Bring in the smoothie bowl!

Smoothie bowls are so easy as we just throw together a few foods we have on hand. Today we've put in a blender yoghurt, unsweetened almond milk, a banana and some Mavellla Immune Boost. We topped the smoothie bowl with lots of fruit and as shown directly above with Buckinis (which includes activated buckwheat, chia and flax).

Mavella Immune Boost contains nine concentrated super berries - Raspberries, Strawberries, Pomegranates, Elderberry, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Cranberries, Goji Berries and Acai. These are in a super concentrated form and are known to be high in antioxidants, with the added benefit of prebiotics, probiotics, vitamins and organic natural plant proteins.

Caspar also loves some good old yoghurt; this is coconut yoghurt which is so creamy but feels lighter in the tummy. We've again used Mavella Immune Boost (it's winter after all!) and mixed a teaspoon into the yoghurt.

Superfood Smoothies at How we Montessori

Smoothies are a great after school or afternoon snack. Caspar is having the berries and Otis has the chocolate smoothie. To make the chocolate smoothie we blend milk, Mavella Brain Boost, a banana and a tablespoon of honey.

Mavella Brain Boost contains natural plant products known to contain Omega-3, such as flaxseed and chia. It also contains a wonderful combination of two organic plant proteins that together create an all round amino acid profile important for growing kids. Also included is the popular all natural and organic Peruvian superfood Cacao which gives a chocolate taste. Australian made fruits Blueberry, and Kale also known for their antioxidant benefits have been added. Plus there's prebiotics, vitamins and Calcium.

I love that gappy smile! Caspar takes about 20 seconds to finish his smoothie.

Lastly, I try to sneak some superfoods into dessert. I've tried forever to make a healthier version of chocolate mousse. Caspar and Otis don't like it too chocolatey, so this one has a mild chocolate flavour. We mixed in Mavella Brain Boost (2 tablespoons)(alternatively cacao would work well) with some coconut cream (400ml can), honey (ΒΌ cup), refrigerate overnight and top with cacao nibs. It has a real mousse texture. You can substitute honey with rice malt syrup and add more Brain Boost or cacao if you like it more chocolatey.

I have shown lots of sweet options, if you are looking for a way to boost savoury foods have a look into Veggie Boost. You can get 15% off all products at Mavella using the discount code howwemontessori at checkout with free postage within Australia!
