Otto has been using this little basin on the bath since February. I wanted to give you an update because it is still working wonderfully for us. We are living in a small house and the bathroom has no space for a hand-washing table or for a step high enough for Otto to reach the basin. We already have his potty in the walkway. The basin on the bath almost takes up no space.
The negatives including the mirror which is really unclear, the child can see themselves in it but not at all clearly. My husband moves the basin when he showers but myself and the other children leave it there when we shower, it doesn't get in the way. It does need cleaning but just a simple wipe over when cleaning the bathroom is all it requires. As with any basin at the child's level we need to be clear to the child when and how they can use it. If we leave Otto's toothpaste down he will brush his teeth a lot during the day (he loves the taste of his toothpaste). We usually leave water in the basin for hand-washing but if there is water in it during toothbrushing Otto will rinse his toothbrush in the (soapy) water. So we need to empty or refresh the water before and after toothbrushing. Not really a big issue if we stick to brushing our teeth in the morning and night. We also need to keep an eye on the water and refresh it when necessary.
The benefits are huge. By allowing the child to independently reach the hand-washing water during the day leads to more hand-washing and less asking. Otto can independently undress, dress, use the potty so I believe it's great if he can independently wash his hands too. I find for the young toddler it's also super safe, if he had a step stool to reach the basin we would need tap extenders or similar to be able to turn on the taps and would be less stable and need closer supervision. I find the basin on the bath empowering, the child is able to do so much more all by themselves!
You can just see in the above image that we have a low hanging hand towel for Otto and usually there is hand soap available.
You can read my original post about the basin on the bath here. It has worked out well for us, so much more than I had ever expected. Please feel free to ask any questions or let me know if the basin on the bath has worked for you.
